What Is Parallel Processing?

  • Written by Shan Ge

Core processors. Sequential computers. Application checkpointing. These are all terms that many businesses have become familiar with as they upgrade their CPU functionality with every passing year. As such, these are concepts that you absolutely most understand before entering the tech industry.

One piece of computer software processing that has become ingrained with many businesses is processing through parallel methods. A basic understanding will include what exactly parallel computer processing is, what components make it up, and which industries most utilize these technologies.

Defining Parallel CPU Processing

At its core, parallel CPU processing involves bringing different CPU systems together. The goal is to increase the capability of CPU systems to a high-performance level through such a parallel system. Parallel CPU processing (or massively parallel computer processing/ MPP) is a processing paradigm where hundreds or thousands of processing nodes come together for scientific computing. Each of these parts completes a computational task in a parallel processing method. Many companies, such as data science software leader TIBCO, utilize this form of automatic parallelization to run individual instances of the operations system being used.

In parallel computer processing, different parts of the overall system are broken up even further to run simultaneously on different CPUs. This helps reduce the time for processing, which helps to drive frequency increase in the functions of the computer's systems.

Further, a parallel computer processing system can achieve a common computational task by transmitting over a fast-speed interconnect with each system. Many processors are needed for massive companies that must deal with a vast amount of data. If a parallel computer system isn't incorporated into a large business CPU system, this could lead to more significant problems.

Major Components of Parallel Computer Processing

Now that we've determined what precisely parallel system processing is, let's break it down into its components. After all, understanding pieces of a system is the first step to better performance in the different tasks you might encounter. The first hardware component of parallel computer processing includes processing nodes. This component was mentioned before in defining what parallel computer processing is. These act as the basic building blocks of parallel computer architecture. The second component of this form of processing is the high-speed interconnect. For the nodes to communicate a low latency, a high-bandwidth connection is required. This is where this part of the parallel computer architecture comes into play.

Another part of this parallel computer system includes the distributed lock manager (DLM). The DLM helps to coordinate the resource sharing amongst the nodes that interact with the external memory. The distributed lock manager first takes the request for resources from various nodes. After this, the DLM will connect the nodes when the resources become available. Each of these components assists a parallel computer system to function at a high-performance level.

Industries Utilizing Parallel Computer Processing

As mentioned before, scientific computing methods of parallel computer processing can be used in the insurance industry. In addition, a parallel computer system is the spine of many forms of scientific study in the energy industry, including astrophysics simulations, seismic surveying, and quantum chromodynamics. This form of processing is also used as a software tool to help the banking industry, investment industry, and cryptocurrency.

This form of processing is another software tool that can be used in a variety of different fields. Wells Fargo utilizes the parallel process for credit scoring, risk modeling, and even fraud detection. Special effects companies also use this form of processing to help render and color various big-budget movies. Truly, there’s no limit to the array of industries in which a parallel process proves vital.
