Aged Care Duties & Responsibilities: What You Need to Know

  • Written by News Co Media

Since Australia has a huge population that is nearing retirement, the aged care sector has grown by leaps and bounds. A large section of medical professionals have opted for the sector and those filled with empathy have cherished the profession.

Before venturing in the aged care sector, know what the work entails, the duties and responsibilities related to the job.

Regular Routine of Aged Care Professionals

As a nurse or care worker, the routine of every professional will be different, based on their assigned tasks. The work can be challenging, but fulfilling too. Probably, the professional would have to complete rounds to take care of the elderly in a hospice or work in the kitchen to prepare their food, the primary goal of every aged care worker is to provide empathetic high quality care for all the people. Here are some of the prime duties and responsibilities in an aged care facility:

  • Help elderly residents with routines
  • Administer prompt medication
  • Render access to medical services
  • Provide healthy, nutrition-rich food aligned with proposed diets
  • Monitor and document health conditions
  • Assist in changing clothes, taking regular baths, and other help
  • Communicate calmly with residents related to all matters
  • Manage resources and allocate staff to diverse duties
  • Organize events, workshops, and other activities
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety, as per rules and regulations

Diversity in Duties Based on Job Position and Experience

Depending on the nature of the job or your previous experience, the responsibilities differ from the other in aged care. A good team of aged care staff can improve the elder’s quality of life drastically.

Each job role supports older Australians with services that help them live their lives better. These duties can span housework, hygiene care or even medical care. Some tasks could be more demanding but collectively, the services aim to provide a comfortable living environment for the elderly, either at their homes or at the hospices. Older Australians could develop certain physical, mental, or social issues when performing day to day tasks and thus might require constant assistance to perform those activities.

The chain of command in this sector depends on a team that supports older residents and demands a variety of skills and experience for providing efficient care. If you're looking to get started in aged care, then a certificate III in individual support or aged care is the perfect choice as you’ll be qualified to be a care worker and provide ageing support and personal care for older people.

  • Personal care workers visit old people within an aged care facility, to perform routine activities and tasks. Some need basic help in cleaning, gardening, or transportation while some provide social support to help them social outings on a regular basis.

  • Higher care elders may require help with food preparation. In this case, the elders sometimes depend on catering service providers who are well versed with offering aged care food services including meals and drinks although they might need a carer to help consume food or drink. Nursing home catering also makes use of revolutionary food assistance technology, including the use of special cutlery and spoons, or feeding tubes for those ailing from a disease or condition.

  • Clinical care is essential for some elders who require timely medication management, and wound care. This duty can be fulfilled by experienced nurses who pay attention to the medication and understand these duties compared to other aged care workers.

Trends in the Aged Care Sector and Typical Requirements

It is essential for those opting to choose the career as aged care workers need to be tolerant and flexible in their responsibilities, and might have to work late hours or on weekends on a regular basis. Some job roles could also cover mental health and community support, for which incumbents need to be patient and knowledgeable in handling elders efficiently.

As community support workers continue to work on routine activities, a plan should be in place for regular events and recreational activities that keep the elders happy and active. Generally, a lifestyle worker could organize lifestyle programs to enhance the wellbeing of seniors. These workers need to be extremely friendly, empathetic, enthusiastic and even social, in their interactions with the elders. Their knowledge in performing lifestyle assessments could help in designing specific programs or activities for certain kinds of residents who might not fit in with regular groups.

In recent years, there has been a rise in demand in the jobs for nurses of all kinds – registered nurses and the like in aged care. As the nature of the profession and the duties evolve over time, healthcare professionals are assigned to manage the vital records and physical changes, while making timely assessments like physical examination, pulse and temperature taking, blood pressure checks, or blood sugar levels. It depends on the experience of the healthcare professional and the nurse if they can render complex pain management solutions or palliative care treatments on a regular basis.

Conclusion

Since every job position in the aged care sector has similar responsibilities and duties, pertaining to care, and enhancement in the elder’s quality of life, it all boils down to their experience and expertise in taking up certain roles and duties. The chain of command in this sector depends on a team that supports older residents and demands a variety of skills and experience for providing efficient care.
