What to do When Caregiving Gets Awkward

  • Written by NewsServices.com

Old people are generally sweet and cute having a lot of love to give. However, they might get cranky sometimes making them very difficult to deal with, especially when you are their caregiver. In such cases, caregiving becomes difficult and awkward, as they become uncooperative and difficult. Their crankiness can be explained off as effects of hallucinations, personality changes or temper tantrums. This leaves the caregiver having to devise a friendly means to deal with them. In this article, we will highlight different situations when caregiving gets awkward and how to deal with them.

Behaviour Problems in Elders and How To Deal With Them

In this section, we will discuss some of the behaviour problems common with elderly people, and suggest means to deal with them as a caregiver.

  • Anger and Outbursts: Sometimes, your elderly patient can be angry and act hostile towards you. This might result in vocal outbursts in certain instances. In such cases, it is important to be patient and kind. Finding out the cause of their irritation is key to dealing with the situation. They might be growing through pain or feeling the sense of grief, that comes with losing friends and loved ones as you grow other. It could also be memory issues or pains from a physical condition that is getting them worked up. Try to be gentle with them and take a break after administering care.

  • Refusing to Shower or Bathe: Refusing to shower or bathe is a common problem with elderly people. This is due to a lot of factors which include depression, autonomy as well as loss of senses. Sometimes, elderly people are too sad to care about their hygiene. For others, being told when to shower does not sit well with them as they try to maintain control over their lives. Others, simply cannot tell when they need a shower. As a caregiver dealing with an elder that has refused to shower, it is important to find out the root cause. If the problem is depression, then their doctor should provide them with medications and treatment. If it is a case of autonomy, try to convince them to let you help. Do this by assigning them tasks such as brushing their teeth or washing their face. This will enable them to feel like they are still in charge. If it is a case of loss of their senses, do your best to convince them that they need a shower.

  • Paranoia, Delusions and Hallucinations: These three conditions manifest in different ways when it comes to elderly people. They might see people or things that are not there. You might find them talking to a lost loved one or accusing people of trying to hurt them. They might also accuse you of taking something of theirs. In each case, it is important to notify the doctor of the situation as soon as possible.

Conclusion

Most importantly, it is necessary to hire a professional caregiver to take care of your elders. This will ensure that they are in good and trained hands. Contact NDIS provider Sydney to hire a professional caregiver in Australia.
