As the conflict in the Middle East continues to put increasing pressure on local fuel supply, Australian transport companies are experiencing increasing financial and logistical pressures. 

Interstate car transporters are urging buyers to book early and act fast, or risk missing out on transport altogether. 

Service Interruptions Amid Fuel Crisis

Road logistics companies are booking up quickly as Australians monitor the unfolding situation and recognise the impacts of diesel shortages. But that’s not the only concern.  

As fuel becomes increasingly difficult to access, prices continue to rise. In some states, the cost of diesel has already exceeded $3 per litre, and that figure is expected to rise. While federal initiative to halve the fuel excise will help, Australians will still be facing high prices at the pump. Unfortunately, many transport providers will need to pass these rising costs on to consumers in order to keep businesses running.  

Further, fuel availability is becoming an increasing concern. Even where consumers are willing to pay extra for transport, this may not be possible if transport operators cannot access the fuel supply they need. Shortages could mean that businesses are forced to reduce travel or even cancel trips, possibly at short notice.  

What Happens When Fuel Runs Out

The tense fuel situation has triggered a rush on interstate transport, with many consumers who might previously have planned to drive across the country instead opting for the greater security of interstate freight companies.  

This is a better option in cost savings and avoid logistical issues, but it isn’t foolproof. Transport companies are also facing diesel shortages. In time, this could mean that they have to cancel services, leaving vehicles and other property stranded.  

If trucks run out of fuel on the road, fully loaded, they could end up stuck in the middle of the country with no way of completing their deliveries. This could put consumer vehicles at risk of damage, or simply mean that they are unable to reach their owners for extended periods of time.

According to the industry experts, the best approach is not to wait "In all honesty, the best advice is, if you need something shipped interstate, do it now. It is looking like the fuel crisis will only get worse" said Robin Moore, of interstate car shipping company, All Vehicle Freight. 

While transport operators like Moore are taking steps to secure their operations and avoid harsh impacts on consumers, there’s only so much they can do in the current circumstances. For consumers who want to avoid getting caught up in the crisis, there’s no time to waste.
