Power Tools and Their Uses: A Short Guide

  • Written by Ester Adams

Nowadays, there are plenty of electric power tools readily available in shops which can confuse a beginner as their functions often overlap. So, it is essential to know the distinction between various tools to identify and use them effectively. Since many companies now produce and distribute these power tools, it is equally important to choose the right brand that suits your needs and ensures quality service. Makita tools are now preferred across Australia and worldwide, as they produce and distribute their products across the globe and maintain excellent after-sales service.

With the help of power tools, workers can now complete hefty tasks within a few hours. So, it would be apt to say that the advent of electric power tools has made work effortless, quicker and effective. Now, let us look at the various tools available in the market and their uses.

  1. Grinders

Grinders are meant primarily for finishing purposes as they separate materials using abrasive cutting operation. They help in rendering proper form and figure to the finished piece. Both cordless and corded varieties of grinders are available on the market. They have diverse functions such as levelling and flattening solid edges and cutting various wood and metal objects. Belt grinder, cylindrical grinder, gear grinder and disc grinder are some of the commonly used grinders.

  1. Air Compressors

An air compressor stores pressurised air in the form of electrical energy inside a storage tank. This particular device can store energy in the form of pressurised air by filling it till the tank reaches its saturation. Some of the applications of an air compressor include filling HPA and powering up tools like jackhammers.

  1. Drills

Drills hollow out the workpieces (wood, metal etc.) for running cables, pipes and other similar materials. Drills are also essential in the installation of doorknobs and the precise fixing of screws. A few varieties allow the user to control the torque amount supply. A popular variety among drills is the hammer drill which works quicker than the ordinary drills.

  1. Chainsaw

A chainsaw is a handy power tool that effectively uses its spinning teeth to cut through wood, concrete and other construction materials. Since they are easily portable, many builders commonly use them for various purposes in a construction site. Due to its spinning chain's friction, chainsaws are incredibly faster than most other cutting tools.

  1. Belt Sanders

Belt sanders are an unavoidable tool in carpentry as they ensure high accuracy and fine finishing. They are vital in removing flaws from the workpiece to make it smoother. A belt sander can either be handheld or mounted and has a layer of thin sandpaper on top. Rough grits will help separate unwanted materials quickly from the wood surface, while thinner grits help polish the surface.

  1. Heat Gun

These are handheld tools that help produce hot air for various purposes, such as softening bonding agents, stripping old paint, and warping and welding plastic. They require electrical energy to generate this hot air, and the user can face it towards the object through the provided outlet, as an electric fan present inside evens out the heat.

  1. Routers

Routers put holes in workpieces like wood and metal. They are commonly used to flatten uneven edges, shapes, and structures, and are pivotal in cabinetry construction. As these are convenient to handle and easily portable, this tool has become a favourite choice for woodworkers.

Apart from the ones mentioned above, several other machines/power tools facilitate labour-intensive tasks. It is also important to avoid cheaper priced power tools that may not provide the safety, the branded ones ensure. Choosing trusted brands like Makita tools ensures workplace safety and equipment longevity and thus provides value for your money.
