Erosion Control Matting is an Eco-Friendly and Long-Term Solution to Soil Erosion

  • Written by Modern Australian

Erosion control matting is an innovative solution that has become increasingly popular in preventing soil erosion in areas that are susceptible to wind and water erosion. Unlike traditional erosion prevention methods such as stone walls, terraces, and vegetation, erosion control matting is easy to install and cost-effective. It helps limit the amount of sedimentation in water bodies by providing a physical barrier between the surface soil and the elements that cause erosion.

Erosion control matting serves as a protective layer over slopes that are susceptible to landslides or mudflows due to heavy rains. It can also protect embankments from scour caused by fast-flowing water during floods or flash flooding events. In this article, we will explore how erosion control matting works, its various uses and applications, the different types available on the market today, installation techniques used for various scenarios, and some potential benefits associated with using this material for erosion prevention purposes.

There are three main types of erosion control matting: coir mats, straw/straw-coconut blends, and synthetic turf reinforcement mats (TRMs). Coir mats are made from coconut fiber layers that are bound together with latex or rubberized fibers, and they are highly permeable, allowing water to drain through them quickly. This feature reduces the amount of runoff that could cause erosion. Coir mats also provide excellent stability for soil, preventing washouts during heavy rainstorms or high winds. They are most often used on steep slopes where they can be staked down into place and help hold the soil while allowing water to pass through freely.

Straw/straw-coconut blends, on the other hand, are made from a combination of straw fibers and coconut husk chips that are bound together with latex or rubberized fibers. This type of erosion control matting provides excellent stability while also allowing water to move through freely.

Installing erosion control matting is easy and durable, and it can last for an extended period. Before installation, you need to ensure that you have all the necessary materials, including a trowel or shovel for excavation, stakes or rebar for anchoring, an appropriate brush or rake for spreading gravel, and the erosion control mat itself. Start by excavating an area large enough to fit the entire roll of erosion control matting, leaving about six inches of extra space around it. After excavation, use stakes or rebar along with heavy-duty landscape fabric to anchor the perimeter of the area where you want to install your erosion control matting.

Maintenance is essential to ensure that your erosion control matting continues to perform optimally over time. Regular inspections will help you identify any issues that may need attention before they become more significant problems. Look for signs of wear, tears, holes, or weak spots in the material that could cause it to fail prematurely or lead to further damage if left unchecked. To keep your erosion control matting free of debris and build-up that can clog up its surface, use a power washer with low pressure settings on a regular basis (monthly is recommended) to remove dirt and debris from its surface.

Conclusion:

Erosion control matting is a cost-effective and efficient solution that helps protect the soil from erosion and runoff caused by rain, wind, or other environmental factors. It is a versatile solution that can be used in various settings and locations, and it is easy to install with minimal disruption or effort. Erosion control matting also provides a protective layer over slopes, embankments, and water bodies that are susceptible to landslides, mudflows, and floods. With proper installation and maintenance, erosion control matting can help reduce soil loss and protect your investment.
