8 Tips for Slashing Your Power Bill

  • Written by Samantha Ball

You've just checked your electricity bill and you're a little unhappy. Is it possible to cut your bill by the next quarter? Yes. Here's what you should know.

The Price of Energy

Let's start with the bad news – yes, electricity is more expensive than before. It's because we're using more of it, which means there's a need for more powerful, modernised infrastructure across the grid. In other words, as the government upgrades and replaces the existing infrastructure, the price of electricity inevitably goes up, too.

How to Slash Your Power Bill

Okay, so that's what you need to know about rising energy prices. But how do you slash your power bill if it's more expensive to actually access the power grid? Don't worry, it's absolutely possible – here are eight ways to get started.

1. Switch Off Appliances

Don't leave appliances like kettles, cookers and TVs plugged in the wall overnight. You're just using up power for no reason. Instead, take the plugs out.

2. Turn Down Your Heating and Air Con

Do you really need the heating or air conditioning turned up so high? It's often more eco-friendly and energy efficient to just throw on a jumper or let some fresh air in.

3. Change Your Laundry Habits

Rather than washing all your laundry at 40 or 60 degrees, start washing some loads at 20 or 30 degrees. Your clothes still get a good clean, but it takes less energy to run a cold cycle than warming up water for a hot one.

4. Close the Windows

If you're not already shutting the doors and windows during the colder months, start now and make sure the rest of the family does the same. It's a free but effective way to conserve energy.

5. Insulate Your Property

There's evidence that you can save up to 50% a year on electricity costs if your insulate your home properly. So, if the cash is available to you, think about installing insulation.

6. Install an Energy Monitoring System

Energy monitoring systems, or smart meters, let you gauge exactly how much you're spending on electricity, including when you're using the most power and where you can save money. Ask your supplier about a meter.

7. Switch Electricity Providers

Don't forget this one. If you're a long-time customer of one energy supplier, there's a chance you're not getting the best tariff available. Shop around and see what else is available to you.

8. Upgrade Your Lightbulbs

If you're not already using LED bulbs, switch to them now. They give off great light and they're typically cheaper to run than older, more traditional bulbs.

Conclusion

Ready to slash your power bill? As you can see, it's as simple as making very small adjustments to your daily lifestyle. Make minor adjustments to your energy consumption now, and reap the benefits when the next bill comes in.
