Reasons to Support Your Kid’s Decision to Study Abroad

  • Written by Diana Smith

Facing the fact that your child is leaving home to study abroad can be difficult. There isn’t much you can do about it except help them pack and make them promise to call you every day. As a parent, being hesitant about letting your child go is completely natural. However, looking at the whole situation from another perspective, distance is nothing more than independence, which is not just normal but also necessary. So, to help you cope with this big change and support your child throughout the transition, here are five reasons why studying abroad is good for your kid.

Improve their language skills

The best way for your child to improve their language skills is through immersion. It is difficult to learn English and a foreign language will be harder. No matter how much they study and how good their teachers are, they can’t fully master a foreign language if they don’t spend some time in the country where it’s spoken every day. Conversing naturally with native speakers is the best way to learn the accent, slang, and contextual meaning that is rarely taught in classrooms. Moreover, once your child comes home, they will feel much more comfortable using that language since they’ll have a much better understanding of it.

Experience a different educational system

The more your child learns, the better prepared they will be for the adult life. Entering an educational system that is different from the one they are used to can help them see things from a different perspective and improve their problem-solving skills. This kind of knowledge and experience can benefit them throughout not just college but career as well.

It’s important for career success

As mentioned, knowing a foreign language and being able to use it effectively can greatly help your child advance in their career. No matter what their major is, almost every field of work today requires you to know English – and the better you are at speaking it, the more chances you will have. Moreover, the experience alone can be very valuable to any international company, especially those that actually focus on teaching a language. For example, there are many companies in Hong Kong that value their international employees precisely because of that kind of experience. Maybe, one day, your child will have a chance to work for one such company. For example, if your kid falls in love with English, they could work for Monkey Tree in Hong Kong as a teacher.

It fosters independence

It’s completely understandable that you want your baby to stay under your wing so you can take care of them for as long as you can. It’s also completely understandable for your child to be scared of being on their own for a while. However, studying abroad is one of the best ways for your child to gain independence, which they will need sooner or later. Of course, there will be challenges, both big and small. However, you should think of those challenges as opportunities for your child to develop important life skills.

It won’t be as hard as you think

While it’s completely normal to be anxious, there are more than a few things you can do to stay close to your child. For example, you can send them care packs with their favorite treats. Keeping in touch shouldn’t be a problem either next to so many applications like Skype, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Viber. You can chat, share pictures, video call each other, etc. Plus, they might be away from you, but your child will not be alone – there will be many other students just like them, helping each other and figuring things out together.

It’s always difficult when your child goes away from home, whether it is for six months or six days. However, what you need to focus on is all the benefits of studying abroad – and there are many of them. So, focus on the positive, learn how to use the above-mentioned apps for communication, and try not to worry too much – they will be back in no time, and they will return refreshed, wiser, and more independent than before.
