6 Reasons Why You Should Try Out Mulching

  • Written by NewsServices.com

There's nothing more refreshing than smelling a freshly tended -garden during the start of the spring. However, you should remember that spring can have a lot of changes in its weather. Thus, you should be prepared to protect your garden.

How exactly can you protect your garden?

One way you can do so is mulching. It is a good way to protect your garden because it shields your soil and your plant's roots from the elements and various pests.

What is Mulching?

Mulching is a common gardening technique that benefits your garden when done properly. Its process mainly involves covering the soil with mulches such as organic matter like barks, leaves, wood chips, etc., to preserve the soil's moisture and improve its overall condition.

You can buy mulch and landscaping supplies at your local garden stores or at online retailers, like shopping for landscape supplies Hunter Valley has to offer.

Let us put up a disclaimer that states mulching is not a very expensive process. One of the reasons why people don't want to mulch is because they think it's expensive, while in fact, it's not. Not only is it inexpensive, but it's also very beneficial. But while it's inexpensive, it can be a lot of work. Thus, before doing it, make sure you can commit with your time and effort.

To convince you further, we will give out some benefits of mulching and why you should do it.

Less Weeding

Some weeds like dandelions and chickweed prefer to sprout during fall temperatures, but sometimes, they prefer growing during the spring. That said, since mulching involves putting a layer of organic matter above your soil, this will prevent your soil from germinating from these weeds.

Even if some of them germinated in your soil, they will not grow since, because of the mulch, they will have less contact with light, which is essential for their growth.

Less Water

With mulch, your soil will be more efficient when trapping more moisture into the soil. Without mulch, most of the moisture in the soil will evaporate because it has more contact with the sun. With more moisture in the soil, your plants need less water, which is a good environment for them to grow.

Better Soil Health

As well as trapping more moisture in the soil, mulching can help you preserve more nutrients and minerals for your plants. Also, it improves your soil's regulation of temperature. With mulching, you can keep your soil not too cold or hot for plants and organisms to thrive.

These organisms like earthworms, soil-dwelling insects, and microbes can keep living and keep the soil food chain alive, which is healthy for your soil. In short, the more active the environment for your plants is, the healthier they will be.

It Controls Pests and Diseases

Colder months can make your plants very vulnerable. It's also the same with hotter months since it evaporates much of the moisture from the soil. However, in colder months, plants are weaker from pests and diseases.

With mulching, you'll have a shield of organic substances protecting the root of your plants from fungus and bacteria that can harm your plants. You can even pair it with an all-natural fungicide to add extra protection to keep your plants healthy.

Aesthetic

One of the reasons why mulching is popular among garden owners is that it's aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. Depending on the type of mulch you want your garden to have, you can add texture and depth to your garden that can make your garden more pleasing to look at.

You can even make your mulch match the colors of your plants or make it, in contrast, to add a more aesthetic appeal to your garden.

For example, if you have a lot of vibrant greens in your garden, then a dark mulch will suit it great. On the other hand, if you have a lot of dark greens, a lighter mulch will suit it well. You can also try medium-sized Beauty Barks or Saw dust if you have colorful flowers in the garden.

Prevents Soil Erosion

Your topsoil is often unprotected and prone to erosion due to weather conditions like heavy rains, hailstorms, and heavy winds. These weather conditions will easily erode your soil, especially if the garden itself is unprotected. Not only that, but they can also kill the soil organisms living inside the soil, which is a good source of nutrients for both the soil and plant.

That said, mulch can supply cover for the topsoil to prevent this from happening. This results in much more secured topsoil that will prevent the roots of your plants from being exposed to the elements.

Final Thoughts

Mulching is good for your garden if you want to make your soil healthier for your plants. Not only does it retain moisture and nutrients that your plant needs, but it also protects your plants from the elements and the weather. Not to mention that it can help make your garden look more pleasing.
