How Can I Make My NBN Faster?

  • Written by NewsServices.com

An inefficient and slow NBN connection is enough to frustrate even the best of us. The experience is worse, particularly if you’re paying for a faster connection.

NBN's service quality in Australia improved but slow internet is still a major issue for most people. Although there's no universal solution for a slow internet connection, some common problems have simple solutions.

Read on to discover possible reasons why your NBN is slow and what to do about them.

Potential Reasons Why Your NBN is Slow

  • Network Congestion

Network congestion occurs when too many people use the internet simultaneously. This increased activity overstretches the bandwidth or network capacity, causing slow connections.

Although NBN has a high capacity, the connection is slower during certain hours when traffic is highest.

  • Hardware Issues

Older software or hardware often has outdated technology. Such devices lack the capacity to leverage NBN’s fast internet speeds.

Upgrading your modem or router can significantly improve your internet speed.

  • Distance from the Node

If you’re using Fibre to connect to the Node (FTTN) network, your internet speed mainly depends on the distance to the node.

The signal travels via old copper wires, so a long distance results in a worse connection.

  • Plan Speed

Your current plan or tier determines the speed limit on your NBN connection. If the speed is too slow, you can upgrade to a higher tier for a better connection.

  • Connection Issues

NBN is a large network with various weak points. Some types of NBN connections are less effective than others.

There are numerous areas where issues can arise and affect internet speed, such as network delays and faulty equipment.

Ways to Fix a Slow NBN Speed

  • Run a Speed Test to Help Troubleshoot the Issue

You should conduct an internet speed test if you're paying for a high-speed plan and can't explain the slow connection. Free internet speed tests online determine the exact upload and download speeds.

For instance, if you record low speeds of 2 or 3Mbps, the issue is likely with your internet provider.

  • Update or Upgrade Your Modem

If you have an old model modem, upgrading to a newer version might do wonders for your internet speed. However, if your modem is relatively new, you don’t need to buy a new one before you try a few tactics.

First, try changing the modem’s location. Interference from electronic devices, doors, walls and large spaces can affect the internet speed.

Fewer walls have less interference so ensure you can see the modem from most areas in your home.

  • Try Mobile Broadband or Home Wireless Broadband.

If your NBN connection is unsatisfactory, you can switch to home wireless or mobile broadband. Both use the same network as your mobile phone.

If your mobile provider’s network coverage is excellent, you’ll likely have a great home wireless or mobile broadband connection.

  • Sign Up For a Faster Speed Tier

If you're using a cheaper NBN plan or tier, it may be the cause of your slow internet connection. You can resolve the issue by signing up for a higher tier with better speeds.

  • Change NBN Provider

NBN providers typically indicate the expected speeds during peak hours. If your NBN connection is ever slow, you should compare other providers to find a more suitable plan.

If you've tried the above suggestions but still receive a slow NBN connection, the issue may be on someone else's side.

The best move is to ask an expert to troubleshoot your NBN speed issues.
