Knowing Your Skin Type and the Proper Care it Needs

  • Written by Modern Australian

The important part of proper skin care is to determine the skin type. There are five basic skin types, but over the years it is possible that you go from oily to normal or from normal to dry skin type. Test your skin every few years to keep track of the changes and to ensure that you are using suitable care products that will benefit your skin. Skin is the largest body organ that requires care and has its specific needs. To have a beautiful skin is everyone's dream and it is achievable when one knows how to take care of it appropriately.

How to determine skin type

If you’d rather avoid seeing a dermatologist, there is a simple method to figure out your skin type. Fairly easy and with quick results, although not strictly precise. Wash and clean your face without applying any cream or moisturizer. Dry by tapping and leave it bare for about an hour. After that examine your face and see if it is tight and if there is shine on your cheeks, nose, and forehead. If it is tight, your skin is dry. Shine on your forehead and nose means your skin is normal, but if your cheeks are shiny, you have oily skin type.

Dry skin

Dry skin often looks a bit rough with occasional red patches due to the irritation. People with dry skin have lines that are more visible than on any other skin type. Depending on care and weather, dry skin can crack, peel and become itchy. Dry skin requires constant hydration and special care based on natural and nurturing products like shea butter. Look for products that contain hyaluronic acid serum which will help you keep your skin hydrated and elastic.

Normal skin

People with normal skin are lucky enough to have a good balance of lipids and water, which makes the skin soft and radiant. Rare imperfections are easy to handle while taking care of normal skin is quite simple. However, normal skin can easily turn into the dry skin over time, so it is important to react timely. Marine Collagen can help maintaining the level of collagen much needed for the skin elasticity and wrinkle reduction. Other than that, a moisturizing cream will do the job.

Oily skin

This skin type is quite common among younger people, but some have oily skin throughout the life. Typical oily skin is shiny with blackheads and pimples. People with this skin type should clean their face with mild soaps and hydrate by avoiding greasy moisturizers. Look for care products that will not clog your pores and make sure to use some herbal tonics that will balance your complexion. Yogurt mask is proven to be great for oily skin, so apply it to face once a week.

Combination skin

Usually, this is a combination of normal and oily skin, where oily parts fall into T-zone, meaning forehead, nose, and chin. It may be a bit complicated to find the products that will suit you, while it is more likely that you’ll have to use a different kind of products for different areas. To make sure you have a proper skin care look for products that will correct the balance, like the ones with jojoba, which is one the best normalizers for combination skin type.

Sensitive skin

Having a sensitive skin is somewhat similar to dry skin, especially when irritated. People with sensitive skin have difficulties finding the right products since most of them cause negative skin reactions which can be quite unpleasant. Best way to take care of sensitive skin is to consult a dermatologist or to look for organic products designed for the sensitive skin type.

Conclusion

Our skin can often show our overall health and our lifestyle. Look up skin care online for products that can help us to balance and to nourish the skin, but in fact, proper skin care starts from the inside. Our diet, amounts of water that we drink, alcohol, cigarettes, and stress have a direct impact on how does our skin looks and feels. Besides the skin products, healthy lifestyle is the starting point for proper care, whether for skin or anything else.
