Here’s Why Learning A Musical Instrument As An Adult Can Be Good For You

  • Written by Briana Hilton

With more time spent indoors this year, there has been an increased desire to learn a new skill or take up a fresh hobby while we’re at home. Earlier this year, it was reported that Australians are engaging in activities such as drawing, yoga, and playing a musical instrument to cope during difficult times. The latter, in particular, has resulted in the massive popularity of YouTube tutorials as thousands of people around the world attempt to learn how to play the guitar, drums or piano from home. If you’ve always thought about learning how to play a musical instrument but think that you’re far too old to take it up, take heart. With enough practise, you can play your favourite songs on your chosen instrument in a few months’ time, and what’s more, engaging in this creative hobby can actually be good for you. Here are all the reasons why you should learn to play a musical instrument as an adult.

It’s a great stress reliever
A study has found that women, young adults, and those living with young children have experienced the greatest rise in mental stress this year. If you’re experiencing a large amount of stress or anxiety, try learning to play the guitar or piano. Not only is it a great stress reliever, but it can also be incredibly relaxing and soothing, and it can be calming after a hectic day of work or doing chores. You can take an online course to hone your skills, and you’ll learn all about music theory and reading music through group or one on one sessions. Most courses also offer instructor feedback so you can continue to improve as you practise.

It can improve your memory
Ageing can have an impact on our memory, but anything that keeps the brain active, such as learning a new skill, can help to improve the way we retain information. Learning to play a musical instrument not only improves one’s cognitive memory, but it also enhances muscle memory. The more you practise, the sooner you’ll be able to play without looking at a guide or sheet music. And since playing an instrument is good exercise for the brain, it may even help to reduce your risk of developing cognitive disorders, such as dementia or Alzheimer’s.

It builds self esteem
Learning to play a musical instrument can give you a feeling of accomplishment and enhance your self esteem. As you continue to improve, you’ll be more confident, and this newfound confidence will have a positive impact on other aspects of your life, such as your career or your relationships. Thus, you’ll be able to accomplish more and feel better about yourself the more you engage in your hobby.
If you want to be more confident, less stressed, and have a better memory, try picking up a musical instrument today. You may be surprised at how learning to play as an adult will make your life so much better.
