Reasons Why You Should Become an Attorney

  • Written by Jason Davis

To become a lawyer, you’ll have to be committed in all aspects possible. There is a big financial investment involved in education and training. Just as with any other profession, you shouldn’t only be looking at the money because there is more to life than that. If you’re still unsure if a career in law is right for you, here are some of the reasons why you should become an attorney.

Earning Potential

Attorneys are some of the highest-paid professionals in the legal industry. There is no ceiling when it comes to how much you can earn. According to the Bureau of Labor, the median income of an attorney was set at $120,000. The top attorneys can make up to a million dollars depending on the cases they’re handling. Even if money is not a big motivation, you’ll be glad to know that being a lawyer is a financially rewarding profession. It should be noted that not all attorneys will make big bucks. If you run your own law firm, you’ll be expected to oversee the overheads while ensuring that you’re profitable at the same time.

You Get to Help Others

A career in law is people-focused. You’re representing individuals or groups. That means you get to help others with their legal problems. If you’re a public interest attorney, you get to fight for legal causes that are for the greater good of the society. Even those in private practice will handle a few pro bono cases in a year. If you’ve always had a passion for helping others, you’ll be right at home when you decide to pursue a career in law.

The Prestige

Law has always been seen to be a prestigious profession. Lawyers command respect among the elite. It is not something that you’ll find with any other profession. There is also a glamorous image that is portrayed by the media.

Practice Areas

You get to choose the practice area that you’d want to focus on once you become a lawyer. You can opt for criminal, civil, personal injury law, or commercial law. It all depends on your interests. Clients usually want to work with attorneys that are specialized in a specific branch of law.

Global Influence

Lawyers have been at the center of the major happenings in the world. This means that they have a global influence on every aspect of society and business. They help in writing the law and ensuring that justice is prevailing at all times. Most of the people that hold influential positions in governments are lawyers. You can find the trend in the majority of world governments. If you’ve always wanted to be a politician, you can start by being one of the best lawyers in Australia. It will be easier to move to another career once you’re an attorney.

Networking

One of the advantages of pursuing a career in law is the opportunity to network with people from different fields. You get to meet people from all walks of life which gives you a different perspective on things. You not only become a good lawyer but a great human being as well.

You Become a Great Orator

If your work requires that you’re appearing in court frequently, there will no other choice but to master how to be eloquent. You will need to express yourself fluently which is something that will come with its own perks. If you’ve always enjoyed public speaking and have a passion for helping people, a career in law will be an excellent choice.

You Know the Law

This is perhaps the main reason why you’d want to be an attorney. You get to have a deeper knowledge of the law and how it works. You will know how to deal with the various aspects which clients pay you money for. It is a lot easier to get through life when you’re aware of the legal norms and you get to help your family too. It will not be uncommon for friends and family to reach out to you for legal advice.

Attires

For you to be taken seriously as a lawyer, you need to dress the part. You get to wear suits on a daily basis. This is something that some people will fancy. You need to look sharp always when you become an attorney. There are a lot of other reasons that we haven’t highlighted. What is important is that you’re passionate about the profession and not just the money.
