In general, these signs should be placed above the doorway leading to the nearest exit at a height of no less than six feet and no more than eight feet from the floor. 

They should be visible from any location within the building and marked with the word "EXIT" or a pictogram indicating the direction of egress. By following these regulations, building owners can help ensure the safety of their occupants and comply with local building codes and regulations.

Types of Emergency Exit Signs

There are various types of emergency exit signs, including illuminated, non-illuminated, photoluminescent, and self-luminous signs. Illuminated signs use electric power to light up the sign, making it visible even in low light conditions. Non-illuminated signs do not require power and are typically made of reflective materials, making them visible in the light of flashlights or emergency lighting. Photoluminescent signs absorb and store light from a source, making them visible in the dark. Self-luminous signs use tritium gas to create a constant source of light, even in the absence of power. It is essential to choose the appropriate type of emergency exit sign to ensure its effectiveness during an emergency.

Maintenance and Testing of Emergency Exit Signs

It is important to conduct regular maintenance and testing of these signs to ensure they are functioning correctly. Regular inspections should be conducted to check for any damage, including scratches, fading, or missing letters, and to replace any faulty components. Additionally, emergency exit signs should be tested regularly to ensure that they are operational and visible in low-light conditions. By regularly maintaining and testing emergency exit signs, building owners and managers can minimize the risk of accidents, reduce liability, and protect the safety of building occupants.
