Potain MCH 125 Electro Hydraulic Luffing Crane Exceeds Expectations

  • Written by Hermann Buchberger

Back in November 2016, during bauma China in Shanghai (the international trade fair for construction machinery), the Potain MCH 125 was released as a prototype and warmly received for its uniqueness.

After testing with select dealers, it formally launched in early 2018 into several international markets including Australia, New Zealand and Thailand.

Manitowoc global product director for tower cranes, Thibaut Le Besnerais, said at the time: “The Potain MCH 125 Electro Hydraulic Luffing Crane represents the very latest in tower crane design. It’s unlike any other crane on the market.”

What makes it different is that the luffing process is controlled by a hydraulic ram rather than the traditional luffing hoist winch. This makes it easier to assemble and faster to operate for increased productivity. Assembly to a height of 40 metres can be achieved in less than 6 hours, which is a big contrast to the assembly of a traditional luffing crane at up to a day and a half.

The hydraulic ram luffing design (no wire ropes) delivers a shorter counter-jib and “out of service” radius when compared to rope luffing alternatives. This means that it is ideal for freeing up valuable air space on congested job sites or urban projects or railway corridors for example.

It combines the best of both worlds from the Potain MCR luffing jib cranes and the MCT topless cranes. Operation is smooth and quiet; plus, Potain’s VVH hydraulic luffing technology gets the jib from horizontal up 87 degrees in less than two minutes.

The maximum capacity for the Potain MCH 125 is 8t, and at the maximum jib length of 50 metres, it is 2t. Crane operators will enjoy the increased comfort and visibility that comes from one of the largest cabs on the market.

Active Crane Hire was quick to see the potential of the MCH 125. There is a video on their website of their first MCH 125 in operation at Kiama NSW. Demand has been solid and they now have a fleet of 13, with more to come.

It doesn’t matter whether you are an experienced veteran or new to the industry. You should take a look at the benefits of the new Potain MCH 125 Electro Hydraulic Luffing Crane at Active Crane Hire.
