Gap Year Goals - 4 Flexible Online Jobs That Are Perfect For Recent High School Graduates

  • Written by News Co

The challenge of job hunting after high school is real. Overcoming the arduous years of VCE only to face the new struggle of finding employment is something many young people continue to experience year after year. It can be especially gruelling if you’re seeking something flexible to fit around tertiary studies or other commitments. The good news is, online work is now being embraced more than ever, so the right job for you might be just a few clicks away! Here are four online jobs suitable for recent high school graduates:

1. VCE Tutor

As you may know from your own experience, tutoring is a valuable asset to any student. Now, more than ever, people are embracing online tutoring. VCE tutors who have recently experienced the VCE themselves are highly sought after by students and families. So much so that you’ll often be able to charge more for your services than tutors who have tertiary degrees and far more experience.

You can also adjust your rates to be higher if you got a high ATAR or really positive grades in a certain subject. As a private tutor, you keep your own schedule and can choose if you want to offer sessions in person or online, so with a few ongoing clients, this can be a great gig to keep up!

2. Language and Conversation Tutor

Helping others learn new languages can be a fun and simple way to earn an income. To work as a language tutor, you should ideally have strong speaking, reading, and writing skills. If you are a fluent or native speaker of another language but not confident in your grammar, you can still offer to tutor people in conversation skills and using casual language. It pays less than traditional tutoring but is still a popular service for language learners.

To make it easier to find students and clients, there are many online language learning apps where you may be able to sign up as a tutor if you meet certain requirements.

3. Online Transcriptionist

If you’re more inclined to work independently, then being an online transcriptionist could be for you. A transcriptionist is given audio or video files to listen to and then writes what they hear in a text format. You don’t always need a lot  of experience for this work, but it does demand a wide vocabulary, typing and listening skills, and a lot of patience.

You can look up transcribing jobs on gig economy apps and advertise your services online, but there are also a lot of websites that outsource transcription work. So, getting started can be as simple as signing up and trying it out!

4. Social Media Management

Social media management can broadly refer to a lot of different tasks, like keeping social media profiles updated, planning and posting social media content, creating social media ads, and more. This role will suit you if you wish to work remotely and if you have an interest in marketing, business branding, content writing, and of course, social media.

You can seek out this kind of work on job websites, gig economy apps, or even via word-of-mouth recommendations. If you know somebody who tends to neglect the social media side of their business, why not offer them a bit of help?

Now that you know more about some of the most accessible jobs online, you can start your applications today. Good luck!
