5 Tips To Explore Australia Via Train

  • Written by NewsServices.com

Australia is a large, beautiful, diverse country with rich culture, tradition, history, and natural beauty. There’s plenty to see, visit, and experience for locals and tourists. It’s just too bad that most forms of long-haul transport in this country don’t let you have to do all that up close.

Or do they? Going by plane from one Australian seaboard to the other keeps you from the most scenic routes most of the time. Private trips usually do the trick, but they’re pretty heavy on the budget.

On the other hand, trains give you the perfect ground view for witnessing all of the wonders of the outback and beyond. And if you know what to do and which ride to pick, you can easily have them in your itinerary.

How? Here are five tips for exploring Australia via train.

  • 1. Plan And Book Your Tickets In Advance

If you’re planning a long journey by train, you should know when to buy tickets. The extensive rail network connecting major cities and regional towns usually racks up a lot in terms of dollars, even more so during peak seasons.

Check for busy hours and time your booking, so it meets both your budget and schedule. Doing it early usually saves you a lot of time and effort. Plus, early hours see fewer people going to the station, so you can quickly get comfortable.

Various train companies also have specific prices, routes, meals, suites, and amenities. The best ones offer a grand package of all these things.

For example, Indian Pacific Train lets you enjoy a variety of off-train experiences to complement your journey from Sydney to Perth. This cuts out a lot of the struggle in making your itinerary since you practically have one right then and there.

You can also pick between travel classes, like economy or luxury. The former is more affordable, letting you enjoy cosy seats and accessibility to non-premier amenities. Meanwhile, the latter lets you get access to personalized services and perks like special cuisines at a higher price.

  • 2. Take Advantage Of Off-Train Stops

There are numerous train stops between the cities of Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney, each one offering a bit of what the country has to offer in history, cuisine, arts, culture, and natural wonder. Take advantage of them whenever you can.

If you book in advance, you can also go on guided tours to get up close and personal. These areas have beautiful scenery that warrants just that:

  • Blue Mountains: These majestic sandstone ridges reach great heights and are covered in natural bushland. This is a prime example of Australia’s unique appeal as a frontier beauty.
  • Silver City: This place is a haven for artists and exploration enthusiasts alike.
  • Kalgoorlie: It's known for its rich history of gold mining and boasts of a vibrant community, offering a range of recreational activities for locals and outsiders.
  • Nullarbor Plain: It's a large arid region known for its flat and treeless landscape, a starkly lonely yet beautiful sight to behold. It also boasts diverse wildlife, including kangaroos, emus, and different bird species.

These are just some of the places you get the chance to experience during the stops. Make sure to take pictures and leave footprints.

  • 3. Pack Accordingly

Be aware that weather patterns differ depending on the cities you visit. The Australian outback cuts through several regions with different climates. So, it's best to pack clothing and gear for both hot and cold weather.

It would also help to pack plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially since the country experiences sharp changes in temperature. Sunscreen will also help you stay protected from UV radiation, a constant health hazard.

  • 4. Bring Entertainment

You can carry something to keep yourself occupied on the train. It’s always good to slow down once in a while to fully enjoy a long-distance trip.

You can bring a travel guide to know what to expect when you get to a specific spot. Also, you can download your favourite movies or mixes to keep up the vibes as you hop from one place to another.

For music especially, consider listening to an album you’ve never heard before. It can serve as the soundtrack to your trip, allowing you to recall everything you’ve experienced whenever you listen to it again.

  • 5. Talk To New People

Most Australian natives have a lot of insights about the places they live in. While on the train, try striking up a conversation with them. Ask questions about the various historical sites, food spots, and landscapes you’re visiting. You may find things your regular travel guide doesn’t show you while making friends.

Above All, Enjoy

Exploring Australia by train can be an incredible experience if you plan it well. It's a great way to see both the wonders of civilization and the untamed wilderness this country is proud of. Just check your calendar, pick the right train service, pack for the weather, and you’re set.
