Check all the bulbs in your home? How energy efficient are they?

Australia has some of the lowest rates for electricity in the world. However, the energy bills at home can really hit a peak if you overuse. Most of us use an electrical device nearly during all waking moments. Is your laptop plugged in all day? Do you use the microwave a lot? In case you are wondering why your power bill is so high, consider the following tips to save money on electricity at home:

Keep the Doors Shut

Do you have the air conditioning on in the bedroom and the door is also open? Keep the doors in each room closed when the air conditioning on to maintain temperature. Open doors and windows, obviously, carry the heat or cold outside, so your A/C unit will have to work even harder to maintain the temperature you’ve set. That means higher electricity bills. Therefore, always keep doors closed when you want to make a room cooler or hotter. Alternatively, you can use a fan if you want some cold air and need to keep the door open.

Choose the Best Energy Plan

There’s also the possibility that your power bill is so high because you are using an expensive plan. Are you sure you have chosen the most cost-effective plan for your home? It’s strongly recommended to compare power plans available in your area to keep the costs as low as possible. You could be spending more for a plan with features you don’t even need. You can use an online service like Econnex to compare power plans available right at your postcode. Don’t forget to take advantage of services like this to make sure you are on a power plan that suits your budget.

Use Energy-Efficient Bulbs

Check all the bulbs in your home? How energy efficient are each? Are you using older bulbs that consume a lot of energy? You can save a lot of money by switching to energy-efficient options like CFL bulbs. Also, make sure you are using the right bulb for the right type of illumination. For example, you would really need bright light bulbs in the kitchen, but do you need the same illumination in the nap room? Consider how much illumination each area in your home actually need and then choose the right bulb to save a lot of money each month.

Thaw Frozen Food in the Fridge Overnight

Are in in the habit of defreezing frozen food in the microwave? If you are trying to thaw large chunks of meat in the microwave or on the stove, that would consume a lot of electricity. Instead, you can easily thaw frozen food in the bottom compartment of your fridge. Leave the meats, fish, or anything else you want thawed in the bottom compartment overnight. The food will defreeze and won’t go bad in the process.

Insulate Properly in Winter

You can save money on heating by having your home properly insulated in winter. Do a quick check-up to see if the roof is well insulated if you live in a cold-prone area in the country. There are also other cheap and inexpensive ways to keep your house warm in winter, such as by using thick curtains, which will not lead to power overconsumption.

Keep the above tips in mind to save up on energy bills without overspending. Remember, smartly using electricity is good for your finances and the environment.
