Caravan Shopping? Here's Six Key Questions to Ask at the Showroom
- Written by Modern Australian
If you’re ready to buy a caravan or camper, you probably already have a good idea of what you want. But with so many different options, getting started at the showroom can be tricky.
Let’s face it. The caravan sales industry doesn’t have the best reputation thanks to underhanded tactics by some businesses. Companies dodging calls when caravans break down, bait and switch quotes, delivery schedule issues – that’s why it’s so important you buy from a reliable manufacturer.
I’m John, from JAWA Campers and I’ve been around the caravanning block a few hundred times. By asking the right questions, you can avoid getting sucked into buying a poor-quality van or camper with zero after-sale support. Here are some of the most important questions to ask when you’re at the showroom.
- Can you demonstrate?
Ask the seller to demonstrate the set-up process. Not only do you get a lesson in how to do it properly, but you can make sure that everything is as promised and described.
- Do you offer after-sale service?
After-sale service is a must! You need to know what they will do if your caravan breaks down today or in three months. How will they help you? What is the cost?
- What's the lead time?
You don't need to be sure about making a purchase to ask about the lead time, so make sure they’re open about giving you a specific delivery date if you did buy today. Make sure you also ask about compensation if it doesn’t arrive on time.
- What about repairs?
You should also ask about repairs – how long does it take to book in for repairs, and how long does it take to complete the repairs? You should get these things in writing, so you have something to fall back on if they don't follow through.
- Where are the hydraulics and electronics from?
If someone claims their product is Australian-made and manufactured, it doesn't necessarily mean all the components are from Australia. Unfortunately, the market has been flooded with subpar caravans made with low-quality components like their wiring, lithium batteries, fridges and solar cells to name a few. So, ask about the specific make, model, and quality. You can also look at online reviews for more information to walk in armed with knowledge.
- What's the exact tare weight?
An estimate isn’t enough. You need to know your towing weights to ensure safe operation. You can't work with an estimated weight when you plan to load your caravan up with your necessities and activities.
Whether you're looking for Caravans Sydney or Caravans Brisbane, arming yourself with the right questions and a bit of knowledge can help you avoid buying a lemon.
