Renovation Hot Spots: The Sydney Suburbs that had the biggest makeover

  • Written by Service Seeking
As Sydney’s housing boom begins to decline, ServiceSeeking.com.au looks back at the suburbs that have had the biggest makeover between 2017 and now. The find-a-tradie site has designed a map which examined 5,000 home improvement and renovation jobs submitted by customers over the year according to postcode, with hot spot renovation areas in dark green, and low construction areas in dark red.

Western Sydney residents undertook the highest number of renovations since 2017, at a speed of 50% more than residents in the Eastern Suburbs and more than 25% the amount of those in the North Shore.

So which areas experienced the greatest boom in renovation activity versus average?

  • Western Sydney residents listed 187% more renovation jobs
  • South-Western Sydney residents listed 86% more renovation jobs
  • North Shore residents listed 104% more renovation jobs
  • Eastern Suburbs residents listed 75% more renovation jobs
  • Inner West residents listed 61% more renovation jobs

Which ares of Sydney fell under the average?

  • Northern Suburbs residents listed 17% fewer renovation jobs than average
  • Hills District residents listed 20% fewer renovation jobs than average
  • Northern Beaches residents listed 35%fewer renovation jobs than average
  • Sydney City residents listed 72% fewer renovation jobs than average

Greater Western Sydney is where the majority of the residential work is. With a developing CBD in Parramatta, many white collar workers can live in these outer suburbs with less of a commute to work, and a smaller mortgage. Additonally, houses further from the CBD tend to be larger in size with more scope for home improvement, renovations and repair jobs,” says CEO of ServiceSeeking.com.au, Jeremy Levitt.

Levitt continued: "Residents living in the Eastern Suburbs renovated 40% more than their counterparts across the bridge in the Lower North Shore. Most notably, those living in Bondi Beach required 47% more renovation services than those in Mosman."

Suburbs that renovated the most in 2017:

  • Blacktown residents completed 9.8 times more renovations than average
  • Baulkham Hills residents completed 9.4 times more renovations than average
  • Barangaroo residents completed 8.1 times more renovations than average
  • Quakers Hill residents completed 5.7 times more renovations than average
  • Parramatta residents completed 4.2 times more renovations than average
  • Castle Hill residents completed 3.9 times  more renovations than average
  • Surry Hills residents completed 3.9 times more renovations than average
  • Ryde residents completed 3.7 times more renovations than average
  • Carlingford residents completed 3.6 times more renovations than average
  • Hornsby residents completed 3.1 times more renovations than average

Suburbs that renovated the least in 2017:

  • Clontarf
  • Clareville
  • Roseville
  • Willoughby
  • Millers Point
  • Balmain East
  • Watsons Bay
  • McMahons Point
  • Church Point
  • Berowra

Surprisingly there are some suburbs in which a significantly higher amount of residents completed renovation jobs than than their neighbours:

  • Residents in Lane Cove undertook 89% more renovation jobs than their neighbours in Artarmon.
  • Residents in Auburn undertook 53% more renovations than their neighbours in Granville.
  • Those living in Hornsby undertook 42% more renovation jobs than their neighbours in Turramurra.

The data was derived by compiling over 5,000 renovations and home improvement jobs submitted in 2017 by customers through ServiceSeeking.com.au, the website for getting any job done.
