Tot Traveller - A Guide to Taking Your Baby For a Walk

  • Written by News Company

Are you and your little one ready to take to get outside and start hitting the pavement? Fresh air and natural light are important for the development of your baby and they can benefit from outdoor stimulus. When you first start taking your baby walking outdoors, you should begin with walks of twenty to thirty minutes, gradually extending the duration of your walks, as your baby gets more comfortable with being out and about.

Not only is going for walks good for your baby but it is a great opportunity for new parents to get out of the house and get some exercise. Raising a baby is very time-consuming and can have a huge impact on the amount of free time you have to dedicate to exercise. Going for a walk with your baby allows both you and your baby to get outside, enjoy some fresh air and for you to get some proper movement into your day. However, before you head out for your first walk together, it’s important that you prepare for the first outing properly.

Let’s take a look at a few key things that you should pay close attention to when you’re taking your baby for a walk.

Choose The Right Stroller Or Pram

There is a huge range of strollers and baby prams to choose from, with something to fit every need and budget. If you will be walking in areas that are unpaved, there are strollers available with extra suspension to ensure a smooth journey for your little one. There are specially designed prams and strollers for walking or jogging with, as well as more traditional options to choose from, Nunababy talks about these different options in a blog post on their website. Whichever option you go for, be sure that it has a seat belt, locking brake, deep seat, safety wrist strap and a rainproof cover as well as a wind/sunshade to keep your baby protected from the elements.

Wear The Right Shoes

If you have been house-bound looking after your baby, you may have been living in slippers for the last few weeks. Now that you are ready to head outdoors again, it’s important that you have the right footwear to prevent injuries and to ensure you are as comfortable as possible. Pregnancy can lead to permanent changes in your feet, so it’s advisable to talk to your local running store to be professionally fitted for a supportive and comfortable pair of shoes before embarking on your first outing.

Best Time To Go Walking

During the warmer summer months, it’s best to head out in the early morning before the weather gets too hot. In the colder months of the year, the later morning, early afternoon is better as it will be dark and cold in the mornings. Whatever time you choose to go out, be sure that your baby is dressed appropriately for the conditions. Bring an extra blanket, sunglasses, a cap or anything else you think that you might need if the weather takes a turn during your walk.

Baby Supplies

When you’re at home, everything you need to look after your baby’s needs is almost always within reach. However, when you are out walking, you only have what you pack. It’s important you are prepared for any eventuality so that your bundle of joy is comfortable and safe throughout the walk. Bring a bottle for your baby and anything else that you might need in case they get hungry. Also, be sure to pack nappies and a mini clean-up/changing kit just in case you need them along the way. Finally, don’t forget to bring water for yourself and snacks if you think you might need them.
